Abstract

An experiment was conducted to find the effect of different pH value solutions on our teeth. The hypothesis made is that the lower the value of the pH solution, the more the corrosion.

In this experiment, eggshells were substituted for teeth. 2 eggshells were soaked in each beaker filled with a respective pH value solution, namely, pH 3, 4, 5, 6 (the lower the value, the more acidic the solution) and pH 7 which is water. In the experiment, there were 2 tests to find the average result. Before the experiment, the eggshells were weighed so that after 5 days, the difference in the weight of the eggshells, which indicate the degree of corrosion can be determined.  The change of weight was recorded by taking the eggshells out to weigh them on an electronic balance and the results recorded on the logbook.

However, the results obtained showed the highest amount of corrosion in pH 5 and pH 6. There are no other sources found to support these results. Therefore, the test might not have been very accurate as the duration of the experiment could be too short.

Eggshells are good substitutes for teeth as they contain calcium carbonate, similar to our teeth. We could however improve the results of our experiment by soaking the eggshells in the respective pH value solutions over a longer period of time.
