5. Conclusion

5. Conclusions

5.1  Summary of findings

The large amount of weight loss of the eggshells soaked in pH 5 and pH 6 indicate that the highest amount of corrosion occurred in the eggshells soaked in pH 5 and pH 6. This contradicts the hypothesis which states that a more acidic solution will cause a higher loss in mass.

5.2 Practical applications

The results gathered from our experiment indicate that pH 5 and 6 have the most corrosion. There are no other sources found to support these results. However, eggs in pH 3 and 4 had cracks in them. Therefore, using weight loss as an indicator of the amount of corrosion is not very accurate. pH 3 and 4 causes teeth to weaken and crack which pH 5 and 6 causes teeth to lose weight. However, pH 7, which is our control, has a weigh loss which is slightly between pH 3 and 4. Therefore, the test might not have been very accurate, it might to due to the materials used. Eggshells might not be a proper substitute for our teeth and therefore, the results were not accurate. Another improvement that can be made to this experiment will be the time the eggs were to be soaked in their respective pH solutions. In future, more tests can be conducted over a longer period of time or soak the eggshells in more different value pH solutions.

5.3  Areas for further study
Our experiment was a brief test to find out which value of pH solution would cause the corrosion on our teeth the most. In the future, we would like to find out which pH value solution could minimise bacteria and acidic attack on our teeth and what type of food or drinks will cause corrosion on our teeth.
